One of the righteous demands made fifty years ago by the striking incarcerated workers of Attica Prison has long been a demand of the Disability Community of the right to a minimum wage, a right denied to both groups of oppressed peoples since the 1938 U.S. (so-called) Fair Labor Standards Act.

Incarcerated workers and disabled people need much more than what the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides. We need a law that also protects all of the rights of disabled people – incarcerated or not, guarantees free health care, and covers all of our needs – including aides and equipment, home care if we prefer, childcare, the right to have children, to have the choice of birth control and abortions.

We should have the right to all accessibility accommodations, not just those that are deemed “reasonable” and affordable for individual landlords and business owners. It is our right to live in our homes with our families instead of being locked up in COVID-infested nursing homes, institutions, or jails.

In May, Palestinians called for an uprising against Israeli occupation — and thousands of workers and oppressed people around the world rose up in solidarity. This was an unprecedented push from anti-racists and anti-imperialists to defend the right of all Palestinians to defend themselves by any means necessary.But the demolition and occupation of homes in communities like Silwan and Sheikh Jarrah continues. The Israeli occupation forces continue to bomb and besiege Gaza. Every day, white settlers commit new atrocities and humiliations against Palestinians. And here in the U.S., spreading imperialist lies to further the Zionist occupation of Palestine is a multi-million dollar industry.

On May 26, 2021, 14 million Syrians voted in Presidential elections, overwhelmingly reelecting President Bashar al-Assad. An independent, international delegation of observers called the election “the legitimate, democratic expression of the Syrian people” and noted that “for many Syrians, the election represents the imminent ending of the war, the defeat of foreign plots, and hope for the future.”Join International Action Center organizer Ted Kelly, along with others who participated in the delegation, for an eyewitness account of the situation in Syria as the country continues to push back U.S. intervention, reasserts its sovereignty and rebuilds after years of imperialist war.

The past few weeks have seen the extraordinary resistance of the Palestinian people against Zionist occupation and genocide greeted by an unprecedented outpouring of global solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. In addition to mass demonstrations, and rockets fired in response to Zionist bombings in Gaza, Palestinians organized a general strike on May 18.Thousands of miles away in Bessemer, Alabama, Amazon workers organizing experienced a temporary setback when a vote to unionize was defeated after Amazon employed outrageous union-busting tactics. Despite the setback, workers continue to organize in Bessemer, and the outcome of the vote is being challenged at the NLRB in response to Amazon’s manipulations.

On March 16th, 2021 Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley, author of “Hammer and Hoe: Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists during the Great Depression” and Gary B. Nash Professor of American History at U.C.L.A. joined Asantewaa Nkrumahj Ture of Black Alliance for Peace and Ted Kelly of Workers World Party to discuss the history and significance of the #BAmazon Union struggle led by majority Black workers in Bessemer, Alabama who are taking on Amazon and fighting for a union.In 1990, Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley published the phenomenal book “Hammer and Hoe: The Alabama Communist Party 1928-1951,” documenting the 23-year history of the Alabama Communist Party, a chapter of the Communist Party USA. Formed and molded by Black sharecroppers and laborers such as Black revolutionary Hosea Hudson, the ACP went above and beyond fighting for the rights of laborers and workers, Black and white, to the rights to housing, food and equal pay.

We are also joined by Saladin Muhammad of the Southern Workers Assembly, Devin Cole of WWP Central Gulf Coast and STRIVE, and Susan Abulhawa, Workers World Party member and author of “Mornings in Jenin” and “Against the Loveless World.”

The courageous Amazon workers in Bessemer, Alabama opened a major struggle against the U.S.’s second largest corporation. This campaign, led by Black workers in the U.S. South, is just the opening shot by the working class in our struggle to rebuild power after decades of capitalist offensives. Despite Amazon’s brutal theft of the election through multiple illegal, anti-worker methods, the struggle in Bessemer is not over.We in Workers World Party, along with our allies in the workers movement and others in other left parties, initiated a campaign called Support Alabama Amazon Union (SupportAmazonWorkers.org), to build mass solidarity with the Bessemer workers. Hundreds of solidarity rallies showed the immense solidarity with these courageous Amazon workers in Alabama and beyond.

Supporters learned of the diagnosis March 3, as they were gathered in front of the office of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to call for Abu-Jamal’s release and that of all incarcerated people over 50, who are vulnerable to premature death from COVID-19 and other illnesses.

On February 15, an unprecedented winter storm brought subfreezing temperatures to Texas. After a week, huge sections of the working class, including incarcerated workers, are still without power, heat, and water while elites like Ted Cruz flee to Cancun to wait out the crisis. People in Texas are not only struggling to recover from this freeze, but from previous hurricanes and floods caused by global warming that produces extreme precipitation at all temperatures. This crisis is compounded further by the COVID pandemic and the massive suffering of Texans and workers across the capitalist world. Many people in Texas have frozen to death, and deaths are likely undercounted as more bodies will be found after the thaw. After months of high unemployment, record evictions and 500,000 virus deaths, we have a deregulated energy sector making record profits. The cause of all of this misery and profit for the rich? An entirely deregulated capitalist system that is destroying the planet.

Between Feb 8, and March 29, approximately 6,000 Amazon workers at a warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama will begin voting by mail on whether to be represented by the Retail, Wholesale Department Store Workers Union. The harsh working conditions at Amazon warehouses, along with Amazon’s refusal to adopt measures that protect workers from COVID 19, have pushed Amazon and Whole Foods workers every- where to step up organizing and fighting back.

These predominantly Black Amazon workers, who have in recent months formed the BAmazon Workers Union, are on the cusp of launching a history-changing workers organization against one of the biggest and most powerful transnational corporations in the world, and its super rich union busting owner, Jeff Bezos. In addition, these workers are standing up to the racist, anti-union laws that suppress labor across the south. No matter what the outcome of the vote, this fight for a union in Alabama is already rocking Wall Street and energizing a much needed national explosion of worker organizing.

The GameStop bubble exposes the utter irrationality of the capitalist system. Since Tulip Mania in the 17th Century, financial speculation has been a core feature of capitalist production. This massive speculation, untethered from the production of goods and services for human need inevitably leads to a crash. While seemingly a story of the people taking on the financial elite, the bubble will burst, and when it does the billionaires will force workers to pay. Workers produce all wealth. The stock market, which has been booming during the profound economic and social crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, has little to no connection to the productive economy. Casino finance and speculative bubbles speak to the irrationality of capitalism, a system based on private ownership of the means of production.

On Wednesday, January 20, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office in the aftermath of an election marred by jingoistic partisanship, evidence-free accusations of fraud, and threats of a white supremacist, fascist takeover. As the election season subsides, workers, in the U.S. and internationally, await the subsequent administration and its effects on the working class as a whole.

The coup attempt in Washington, D.C., and the mobilization of a fascist mob numbering in the tens of thousands, must be viewed with the utmost seriousness. These white-supremacist forces pose the greatest threat to the working class, especially the most oppressed. Their political aim is to crush with an iron fist every expression, even the most modest, of workers rights, social justice and Black Lives Matter.Capitalist politicians in both major parties are falling all over each other to disassociate themselves from the would-be coup makers — and from Trump the instigator. But the failure of the state apparatus especially the police to prevent an outright invasion — however short-lived — of the citadel of U.S. political power shows that those in power are unreliable, inept and in no way up to the task of beating back a fascist threat.
