Peoples Fighter Inez Barron wins election to NYC City Council

Elected with 96 percent of the vote, State Assemblywoman Inez Barron will be the voice of East New York and Brownsville in the New York City Council. She succeeds her spouse Charles Barron, who for 12 years has courageously represented poor and working people in Brooklyn’s 42nd District, but couldn’t run again due to term limits.

Both have fought police terror, gentrification and environmental racism. They’ve spoken out against war and the racist sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Inez Barron is a longtime educator with degrees from Hunter College and the Bank Street College of Education. She started her career of activism in 1960 by marching in support of the Southern sit-ins.

Big money tried to prevent Inez Barron from going to the City Council, just as it stopped Charles Barron from being elected to the U.S. Congress last year. Stephen L. Green, the owner of 77 Manhattan office buildings, backed Chris Banks against Inez Barron in the primary. (New York Daily News, July 31) Banks also wanted to bring Walmart to East New York, which Inez Barron and Charles Barron fought.

We look forward to Inez Barron fighting for people in the City Council and Charles Barron winning the seat she occupied in the State Assembly.
