Hosting the meeting was Julio Alvarado, who also spoke for the tertulia’s organizer, the newspaper Tiro al Blanco. Economist Félix Severino then presented what amounted to a spoken book review of Goldstein’s work, which has been reviewed and discussed extensively on workers.org.
The more than two dozen participants were themselves political and community activists, whose sharp questions and comments showed a broad spectrum of left political experience. Berta Joubert-Ceci, an editor of Workers World/Mundo Obrero, provided Spanish translation that allowed a broad discussion beyond the specific content of the book.
The photo shows, from left, Joubert-Ceci, Goldstein and Severino. Two-thirds of the participants bought books, including Goldstein’s “Low-Wage Capitalism,” illustrating the deep interest this community has in Marxist political ideas.
