Tiro al Blanco holds successful first ‘Tertulia’ in New York

New York — Despite forecasts of rain and intense heat, which often intimidate the New York community from meeting in closed spaces over the summer, the first Political “Tertulia” (informal discussion) of Tiro al Blanco in New York attracted a large gathering of people who actively participated with questions and comments following the presentation by our special guest, U.S. intellectual Fred Goldstein, who introduced the Spanish version of his book “Capitalism at a Dead End.”

Before Goldstein spoke that June 27, economist Félix Severino commented on the book, highlighting its most important points. Severino evaluated the book’s importance as a theoretical tool for all those who believe that to overcome the current global crisis, there is no other way than the structural overturn of the prevailing economic order.

Berta Joubert-Ceci, of the editorial team of the newspaper Mundo Obrero/Workers World, introduced Fred Goldstein. She highlighted his renowned social activism since his teens against discrimination, the fight for immigrants, civil rights and multiple historical struggles of the United States. Berta Joubert-Ceci was also responsible for the simultaneous translation of Goldstein’s presentation and the questions and comments section.

At the end of the night, Fred Goldstein received a framed portrait of Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó, the epic hero of the 1965 Dominican homeland, as a gift presented by Arsenio Zapata on behalf of the organizers. The opening speech was given by Julio Alvarado, who also chaired the meeting.

This Political Tertulia, co-organized by the Foundation Caamano Lives! and Caamañista Movement, was held in the halls of a community center located in the heart of the Upper Manhattan community.

According to the organizers, this gathering is named after the newspaper, Tiro al Blanco, published in the Dominican Republic, as it will be linked to the monthly publication of the newspaper, which is directed not only at the Caamañista Movement, but at all the forces who aspire to bring about profound changes in Dominican society. Organizers added that this gathering is also intended to be an open space for reflection, debate and exchange, without sectarianism or prejudice, in which national and international news briefs will be discussed and current ideas and activities shared, while they will make efforts to have a central theme, developed by a special invited guest or audio or visual projection.
