The women in this photo were among more than 150 Idle No More activists and supporters who demonstrated in Detroit on Jan. 20. Idle No More is a movement of First Nations or Indigenous peoples across Canada, dedicated to preserving and protecting tribal lands and treaty rights. They gathered for speeches and songs at the Detroit River, with Canada visible on the other side, and then marched to Cobo Center to demonstrate and leaflet outside the North American International Auto Show. Idle No More also demonstrated Jan. 16 outside Gov. Rick Snyder’s State-of-the-State address, joining forces with anti-fracking activists.
