Stolen Lives commemorated

Parents and relatives of loved ones who have been killed by police stood
up at the Stolen Lives induction ceremony, held on July 17 in New York
City’s Lower East Side. At the microphone is Nicholas Heyward Sr., whose
13-year-old son, Nicholas, was killed on Sept. 27, 1994.
The annual event is organized by the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police
Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation. Since last
year’s induction ceremony, police in New York and New Jersey have killed
at least 32 more people.
Monica Shay — known to many as Kathryn Lee — was remembered at this
event. The national coordinator of the Oct. 22nd Coalition, Shay was murdered
recently in a massacre of family members. In addition, support was voiced for
the hunger strikers at California’s Pelican Bay State Prison.
