More than 150 chanting protesters took over the sidewalk in front of the entrance to the downtown Atlanta Marriott Marquis on Aug. 18. The hotel was the site of an exclusive fundraiser for Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

As the luxury automobiles arrived to discharge their wealthy occupants, they had to drive through a spirited picketline of union members, retired workers, Iraq and Vietnam war vets, students, anti-nuclear activists and others.

Signs demanded troops out now and no war on Iran, denounced McCain’s plan to privatize Social Security and labeled him as Bush III. Passing motorists honked their horns in approval of the varied slogans.

Among the protest’s initiators were the International Action Center, Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition, North Georgia Labor Council and Alliance of Retired American Workers.
